Connect your own Twilio WhatsApp account
If you already send SMS through Twilio, this is the same account with a WhatsApp-enabled number. The credential fields are literally the same two, so there is nothing new to look up.
What you need from Twilio WhatsApp
Gather these in the Twilio WhatsApp portal first. The connection form asks for exactly these fields and nothing more.
| Field | What it is |
|---|---|
| accountSid | Account SID. The same Account SID as your Twilio SMS connection. |
| authToken | Auth Token. The same Auth Token — Twilio does not issue a separate one per channel. |
Credentials are sealed with AES-256-GCM and the console only ever shows a masked value afterwards. Plaintext is never written to logs and never sent back to the browser.
What we configure on the connection
- Sender number (From). A Twilio number with WhatsApp enabled. It must belong to the same account as the credentials above.
- Default send pacing: 1 message per second. This is a conservative starting point, applied per connection, and you can change it at any time. Your real ceiling is set by Twilio WhatsApp — check your account quota and raise the value to match.
Why teams pick Twilio WhatsApp
- The same credentials as the SMS connection you may already have
- One account, one invoice, two channels
- A familiar console and error vocabulary if you already run Twilio
Worth knowing
- The sender number has to be enabled for WhatsApp in your Twilio console before the connection can send.
- Our default pacing starts at 1 message/second, matching the SMS connection. Twilio rate-limits per sending number, so raise it once you know your quota.
What stays on your side
These are yours to hold — and that is the point of bringing your own account: the relationship, the rates and the compliance stay in your name, not ours.
- Meta’s business verification and account review
- The display name and the phone number registered on that account
- Meta’s messaging policies, including what may be sent outside a service window
- The quotas and rate limits Twilio WhatsApp grants your account
